VELAA EID UFAA!

This year’s World Sea Turtle Day coincided with the Big Eid holidays celebrated in the Maldives - and both were celebrated together with the Velaa Eid Ufaa event! Hosted by ORP, Environmental Protection Agency, and Fonadhoo Environment and Sustainable Development NGO (FESD), the Velaa Eid Ufaa event held on June 17th at Fonadhoo - in the neighborhood of former Gaadhoo residents - was a resounding success, showcasing the strong community spirit and commitment to marine conservation.

The event was coordinated with enthusiasm by FESD, a partner L. Fonadhoo-based NGO for the Sea Turtle Ranger Programme, and supported by Ooredoo and the GEF Small Grants Programme facilitated by UNDP Maldives. The event drew over 100 attendees, including children, parents, and teenagers. Stalls were set up for the Maldives Underwater Initiative, Maldives Police Service, Maldives National Defence Force, Fire and Rescue Services, Laamu Youth Society, Maldives Resilient Reefs, and Licious, offering fun and engagement activities for the attendees.

MUI's stall was 22 a highlight with its turtle egg carton painting station, where children expressed their creativity while learning about sea turtles and their habitats. The display of turtle embryos also captivated attendees, offering insights into the early stages of turtle life and the conservation efforts needed to protect them.

Throughout the event, ORP distributed their Sea Turtle Handbooks that have been specially designed to teach students and community members about sea turtles, their biology, and conservation efforts in the Maldives. 34 of these handbooks were eagerly received by children, aiming to instill a deeper appreciation for marine life and inspire the next generation of conservationists. The event also celebrated cultural heritage with a captivating "Dhandi Jehun" performance by a local group from Fonadhoo, showcasing traditional Maldivian music and dance. As attendees departed, they left with not just memories but also a renewed commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.
