SUPPORTING THE SAAFU HITHADHOO INITIATIVE

In Hithadhoo, a neighbouring island of Six Senses Laamu, 90% of households rely on rainwater for drinking, making it essential to protect these water sources from plastic contamination. Plastic bottles are commonly used to store and transport this water, contributing to the growing issue of microplastic contamination, which has been linked to health concerns.

In response to this challenge, the Hithadhoo Youth Development and Recreational Association (HYDRA) has launched the Saafu Hithadhoo initiative, a project focused on reducing plastic usage and improving access to clean drinking water for all residents. The Saafu Hithadhoo initiative addresses a pressing need by tackling the overuse of plastic while ensuring clean water is available. The project aims to reduce reliance on single-use plastics, promote better waste management practices, and raise awareness about the harmful impact of microplastics on health. One of the primary goals is to replace the plastic bottles used for storing rainwater with glass alternatives, which will help mitigate the contamination of drinking water.

Additionally, HYDRA is working on improving waste management in communal spaces across the island. 12 The project will also involve educational sessions that inform the community about the negative effects of plastic pollution and promote sustainable alternatives. By providing residents with the knowledge and tools needed to reduce plastic usage, HYDRA hopes to encourage healthier, more environmentally conscious choices. In collaboration with the local council, the initiative will see the installation of new, durable dustbins in public spaces, accompanied by regular maintenance to ensure these areas remain clean and free from litter.

To further encourage community participation, HYDRA is organizing an island-wide clean-up competition designed to engage residents and instill a sense of pride in their island. The competition will not only help maintain cleanliness in Hithadhoo but also encourage islanders to take an active role in protecting their environment. Through these collective efforts, the project aims to foster a culture of environmental stewardship, where the residents of Hithadhoo feel empowered to care for their island and work together to ensure its future.

The Saafu Hithadhoo initiative is an important step toward safeguarding the health of the community and the environment. By reducing plastic usage, improving waste management, and raising awareness about sustainable living practices, HYDRA is laying the foundation for a cleaner, healthier future for the island. The project is expected to bring multiple positive outcomes, including a decrease in plastic consumption, improved public health, cleaner recreational spaces, and a stronger sense of community engagement. The initiative will officially be launched in February, with funding support from the Six Senses Sustainability Fund. As the project progresses, HYDRA will assess its impact through surveys and feedback from the community, ensuring that the efforts are effectively addressing the needs of Hithadhoo residents. With the combined efforts of the community and HYDRA, Hithadhoo is on its way to becoming a cleaner, more sustainable island where residents are actively involved in reducing plastic pollution and protecting their environment.
