WELCOMING BACK CORAL EXPERT PROF PETER HARRISON

In October 2024, we were honored to host Professor Peter Harrison, a world-renowned coral reef expert, for his second visit to Six Senses Laamu. Prof. Harrison has spent over 40 years researching coral reefs, gaining global recognition for his groundbreaking discovery of mass coral spawning, which he was among the first to document in the 1980s. Prof. Harrison first visited Laamu in April 2023, alongside Prof. Steve Simpson and a BBC camera crew, marking the initiation of the Collaborative for the Reef in Laamu initiative which operates in parallel to the CORDAP-funded national community-focused program implementing larval reef restoration.. During his first visit, he introduced us to his coral larval restoration techniques, which he has successfully established in the Philippines and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

This year, Prof. Harrison returned to Six Senses Laamu to train new members of the MUI team on larval restoration techniques. We also explored ways to refine the methodology, enhancing our impact moving forward. While this method won’t solve the climate change challenges we face today, it can buy us valuable time for the coral reefs as we work toward broader solutions.
