A SERIES OF FORTUNATE HATCHING EVENTS

Since the nesting season began in May, the beaches of Six Senses Laamu have been buzzing with activity from both nesting and hatching green sea turtles! The Olive Ridley Project (ORP) has already recorded 11 green turtle nests this year from a suspected three different females, with more expected to come. Out of these, six nests have already hatched with nearly 500 baby turtles emerging and making their way into the vast ocean to begin their long and arduous journey. This year’s hatching season has brought renewed optimism, especially after the unusually low hatching success rates observed in 2022 and 2023 - averaging about 45% in both years. However, the hatching success rate has jumped to an average of 79% across these six already hatched nests, with one nest achieving an astonishing nearly 100% success rate! This success is partly due to the healthy egg clutches and the team’s dedicated efforts to protect each nest from flooding and beach erosion.
