TURTLE ADVENTURE WITH GEMANAFUSHI SCHOOL
After three postponed attempts, the much-awaited field trip to Gaadhoo, one of the Maldives’s most significant sea turtle nesting beaches, finally happened. Despite the stormy weather, 22 eager students from Gemanafushi School, accompanied by 5 dedicated officials, embarked on this unforgettable journey. The Sea Turtle Ranger and Assistant Ranger, were thrilled to share the history of Gaadhoo with the students.
We shared how the former residents had long protected the beach, managing the nesting site long before conservation projects began. It was inspiring to see the students so interested in learning about the area’s rich heritage. Once we arrived, we showed the students fresh turtle tracks on the sand, a tangible sign of nature’s work in real time. The survey process, was an eye-opening experience for everyone. The students learned so much about sea turtle biology, from their incredible journeys to the challenges they face in the wild.
The field trip concluded with a lively Q&A session, where the students asked insightful questions and shared their new-found love for sea turtles and conservation. Towards the end of the field-trip it was pleasing to hear some students talk about their desire to protect these ancient creatures in the future. The day was a huge success, proving that even in bad weather, the passion for learning and protecting nature can shine bright!
